The strongest records usually know what the human center is before they start polishing the edges.

The short version is simple: when the vocal leads, the rest of the production has a clear point of reference. You know what should stay raw, what can open up, and what would be lost if the mix gets too clean.

Why This Matters Late In The Process

A track can feel technically close and still be emotionally unresolved. The drums work. The arrangement is respectable. But the vocal is still not actually running the song.

You can hear it when a chorus is perfectly built and still feels emotionally smaller than the demo because the production keeps outranking the performance.

Where Mastering Fits

If the vocal already feels like the point of the record and the mix mainly needs a stronger final frame, Stereo Mastering is usually the right lane.

If the vocal still disappears when the production fills out, the record is asking for earlier work. Mastering proof can tell you quickly whether the song is protecting the right center or only sounding finished on the surface.
