Depth is not just more reverb. It is clearer contrast.

The short version is simple: a record feels deep when the listener can tell what belongs in front, what belongs behind, and what is supposed to stay emotionally present.

Why Tracks Get Washed Out

A lot of late-stage depth problems come from trying to add atmosphere without protecting the focal point.

You can hear it when a verse feels huge in solo and then smaller, softer, and less committed once the whole mix fills out.

Where Mastering Fits

If the mix already has a believable front-to-back picture and you mainly want it to hold together more confidently, Stereo Mastering makes sense.

If the whole record is already softened by too much ambience and the focal point keeps blurring, the issue is earlier than finishing. Mastering proof is useful here because it tells you whether the depth is real or just flattering wash.
